Microgaming gives us in Magic Spell a slot machine that seems to be themed around some kind of school for magic, with teachers, students, books and lunch packages being all used as symbols, among other things. The characters in it are not humans, animals being preferred instead, with cats being the majority in the school. I’m not terribly impressed by the actual design, but I’ll give the slot points for creativity in the choice of theme.
You will discover a 5 reel slot here, with 25 bet lines, with a bonus game and with a wild symbol which has a 5x multiplier, though it’s limited in some ways. There is also a $20,000 top prize on the line.
Features of Magic Spell
The game lacks the wealth of features that other slots have gotten us used to, relying mostly on a wild symbol and on its multiplier, with a bonus game also being started if you’re lucky.
First, we have Master Tom, the wild feature of Magic Spell. This is a wild symbol that can only substitute for three other regular icons, but because it is limited in that regard it can afford to bring a pretty big multiplier with it, of 5x. Leo, Catrina and Baz are the three cat characters that can take advantage of the Master Tom wild, when it’s in a position to assist them with a substitution. The wild also creates combinations directly, awarding 10,000 coins when this happens.
The Secret Library
The bonus game requires that certain symbols with letters on them are arranged on the five reels of the game. The five letters are M+A+G+I+C, and yes, that spells MAGIC. When this happens, you get the bonus game to trigger.
You have to find the golden key, which will give you access to The Secret Library, with a chance to win up to 75,000 coins in it.
Betting options and jackpots
The game can get expensive quickly, though it’s all up to you, and you can get away with wagers as small as $0.25 with all lines covered. The maximum bet is at $250 though, so it’s mostly an option for high rollers. You can vary the line bet between $0.01 and $10, the maximum amount using 10 coins of $1.
Considering the top wager placed in this game, of $250, the jackpot isn’t worth that much, with $20,000 being the equivalent of 2,000x the line bet.
Design and symbols
The game’s design is busy enough, and certain symbols do look good, though too cartoonish for my tastes. There are various characters, objects and rooms from the school of magic, plus the letters that spell out MAGIC on the five reels. It does look like a magic themed game, they did get that part right at least.
Symbols: Master Tom (wild), Leo (2,000x), Catrina (1,500x), Baz (1,000x), Crest (700x), Academy (500x), Teacher (450x), Backpack (400x), Books (350x), Chemistry Set (300x), Stationary (250x) and Lunch (200x).
Is It Worth Playing?
The game could’ve been significantly better, especially when it comes to the features which are offered in it. I didn’t find it to be impressive enough to be honest, in any area, so I’d recommend you skip it.
You will find Magic Spell at any online casino which chooses to use software from Microgaming, playable either for free or for real money.
